Kharkov Electro-Technical Plant "UKRELECTOMASH" (HELZ)
Kharkov Electro-Technical Plant ‘UKRELECTOMASH’ (HELZ) is a biggest Ukrainian manufacturer of asynchronous electric motors and wide model line of electric pumps.
Plant was established in 1932 instead of “Oruzheynik” mechanical shop; by 1938, it was formed as independent ‘Kharkov Electro-Technical Plant’. Since autumn 2001, HELZ is a member of Industrial Group UPEC. Stable, for over 70 years, place in home and foreign markets confirm HELZ positions as a recognized leader of national electro-technical branch.
Specialization
HELZ produces over 5.000 modifications of structural, electric, climatic and mounting types of electric motors for any branch of industry and agricultural complex, plus a wide product-mix of electric pumps. Nowadays, HELZ is the sole Ukrainian enterprise that has assimilated the whole model line of low- and medium- sized motors.
Production of wide mix of electric-pump models for universal use is an important trend of HELZ performance. Pump types include on-surface centrifugal, submersible, drainage, deep-well pumps and automatic pumping plants based on injection type centrifugal pumps. HELZ also makes pumps jointly with a leading European manufacturer.
HELZ products are in demand by practically every branch of industry and agriculture, particularly, in: metallurgy, machine-tool building, nuclear power engineering, civil construction, light- and food industries and in agricultural production.
Production Facilities
Enterprise production cycle includes: stamping, foundry, mechanical, wire-winding, painting, control-testing and product-packing operations.
HELZ own tool work-section provides repair and servicing of technological jigs: stamps, press-forms, special-purpose cutting tool and measuring instruments, and relevant fixtures. However, complicated technological equipment is out-sourced from specialized HELZ partners.
Production cycle begins in parts-and-components preparation-workshops. Electric-motor stators and rotors are made in stamping & winding workshop equipped with: press-machines (to stamp-out magnetic-core sheet blanks), automated clincher machines (to assemble stator-core units), automated lines (for mechanized wire-winding) and automatic stator-impregnation machines.
The color-metal foundry workshop employs pressure-casting machines to yield cast products weighing up to 10kg. Mechanical assembling workshop is equipped with automated lathe- and NC- machining lines for turning of shafts and rotors.
HELZ production capabilities amount to ~ 50.000 electro-technical items a month.
Complex Automation System
Within 2008 – 2010, HELZ, like other UPEC Industrial Group enterprises, has introduced its complex design & technology planning automated system with computer-aided engineering support of machine building processes (i.e., ‘CSA Project’).
The ‘CSA Project’ has been realized via integrated CAD/ CAM/ PLM-solutions and upon Pro/ ENGINEER—Windchill software platform by РТС (USA). Simultaneously was launched a unique pre-production process-planning complex based on systems of ‘Windchill MPM-Link’ and ‘Vertical’ by ASCON (Russia).
Introduction of CSA Project implies such advantages as (a) top accuracy and quality of end products owing to closed-cycle work configuration - from 3D-design model to final technologies; (b) reduction of technology processes duration; (c) increased efficiency of engineering documents preparation, (d) significant cut of expenses for design/ technological planning of production as a whole.
Energy Saving Provisions
In recent years, one of the most priority tasks before HELZ is formation of advanced energy-efficiency policy.
HELZ takes up such provisions as: (a) furnishing its production-sections with local screw-compressor plants (in lieu of compressed air-supply from central station), in order to cut losses of compressed air, while reducing power consumption rate via utilization of secondary heat-supply from new local air-compressor plants; (b) jacketing the building walls and structures; (c) updating the shop-lighting fixtures with novel power-efficient equipment; (d) introducing automated power-resource consumption-control systems. Updating of production facilities opens new ways to saving energy-resources. In further outlook to foundry production, outdated gas-flame smelting furnaces will be substituted by progressive induction-types.
Quality Acknowledgement
Since Dec. 2002, HELZ exploits Quality Management System to comply with International Quality Standard ISO 9001:2001. This certified system covers such aspects of ready-products quality-control as inter-process verification of geometry and electric parameters and incoming materials check-control. In 2005, HELZ was nominated as Laureate of all-Ukraine ‘Vyshcha Proba’ (Top Standard) contest, resulting in attesting HELZ electro-technical products with ‘Vyshcha Proba’ Quality Sign.
Economic Activities Index
Net income of Kharkov Electro-Technical Plant ‘UKRELECTOMASH / HELZ’ OJS Co. in 2010 made up 77.818.000 UAH (i.e., by 9% higher vs. 2009). Enterprise features low but stable sales index.
Due to results of period, HELZ has fixed a loss of -9.652.000 UAH (vs. -8.659.000 UAH in 2009).

Joint-Stock Company "Special Design Bureau for Electric Motors (SKB) ‘UKRELECTOMASH’", member of Industrial Group UPEC, is a leading Ukrainian developer of all-engineering and special-purpose low- and medium- sized electric motors. Established in 1963.
Specialization
SKB special-purpose electric motors are employed in sea-vessel life-support systems, rail road locomotives, nuclear power stations, both in man-friendly and extreme climatic conditions. SKB-developed motors perform in 40 countries abroad.
SKB is furnished with test-trial and test-bed equipment, along with in-home experimental production-plant. SKB engineering research involves application of CAD-programs, Pro/ ENGINEER platform and complex set of “SPRUT’ calculation software.
